Kiddies in the City
I had a lovely dinner this weekend with a friend of mine who is expecting. I then realized that we’ve got a good number of small fries living here at 53BP, and it’s about time they got some blog time.
As the colder, not-so-playground-friendly weather starts creeping in, parents have to get creative and come up with a whole new set of ways to entertain the little ones. For some help, check out GOCityKids, a guide to events around the borough and city - many of which are free, and some right across the street at the New York Transit Museum! You can’t ever go wrong with the programs hosted by the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, and they have a really cool website with an animated parrot! UrbanBaby NYC is a great resource for parents on where to shop for the hottest kidstuff, set up play groups on the message boards, and get info on all things (urban) parenting. Time Out New York Kids will keep you up-to-the-minute on the latest happenings — but be warned, to view most content you’ll need to be a subscriber.
Not forgetting that sometimes mom and dad need a drink, many local bars are now offering kid-friendly environments — including The Lighthouse Tavern on 5th Avenue and Carroll St. — who hosts both Baby AND Toddler Happy Hours! I’ve heard from some hipster parents in the ‘Burg that bars over there are also catering to kiddos. Anybody know of a place closer to 53BP that offers something similar?

One really fun event to do with babies and toddlers is the “Baby Loves Disco” Parties at SouthPaw in the Slope.
In the words of BLD creators, “Baby Loves Disco transforms the worlds coolest nightclubs into child proof discos as toddlers, pre-schoolers and parents looking for a break from the routine playground circuit let loose for some post naptime, pre-dinner fun. Make no mistake, this is NOT the Mickey Mouse club, and Barney is Banned.”
OK - it isn’t exactly in Downtown Brooklyn, but it’s easy to get to from 53BP. Check out the BLD site at babylovesdisco.com. The next Brooklyn event is December 3rd.
