Resident Spotlight: Pamela Quinn & The Sweet Divines

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 at 9:29 pm

When it seems like all that’s going on in the music industry is Britney’s custody battle and Amy Winehouse’s drug habit, it’s easy to forget about all the not-yet-discovered talents out there. Lucky for us at 53 Boerum, one of them lives right here in the building!

Pamela Quinn is 1/4 of The Sweet Divines, a quartet of strong, soul-singing women (don’t dare call them a girl group) who will blow you away with their amazing vocals, unique ’60s vibe, and adorably matching wardrobe. There’s no production smoke-and-mirrors here, people. These ladies can just sing.

Check out their site at www.thesweetdivines.com and don’t miss their upcoming show at Union Hall on February 16. Their recent show at Magnetic Field sold out, so get your tickets early. And while you’re at it check out some sample MP3s, especially Honeythistle. I can’t get it out of my head!

Resident Spotlight: Tina Roth Eisenberg

Sunday, March 19th, 2006 at 10:04 pm

53BP has its very own Swiss Miss, but she’s not the one making instant hot chocolate.

Instead, Tina Roth Eisenberg, a self-proclaimed “Swiss designer gone NYC,” is a busy graphic designer who somehow also finds time to creatively photograph the details of daily life, blog about cool products, and await the arrival of her most recent creation, a baby girl that is (for now) dubbed, “Peanutella.”

After studying at the Ecole des arts décoratifs in Geneva and Fachhoschule of Munich, Switzerland-native Tina crossed the Atlantic to find herself a three-month internship in New York. Now, six years (and several jobs at prominent NYC design firms) later, she is the Design Director of Thinkmap. Tina is in charge of all design for customized Thinkmap Applications and the award-winning Visual Thesaurus, a revolutionary 3D interactive reference tool that creates a visual representation of the English language.

In addition to working as a consultant to the prestigious MoMA, Tina’s design work has been recognized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada.

Resident Spotlight: Mikhaela B. Reid

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005 at 9:26 pm

There are some creative juices flowing at 53BP!

One of our fellow residents, *Mikhaela B. Reid,* is a political cartoonist, illustrator and information graphics artist. She cartoons regularly for the Boston Phoenix and Bay Windows. Her work has appeared in an impressive list of publications like the Los Angeles Times, Metro Times Detroit, In These Times, Ms. and The Funny Times. She is also featured as “cartooning’s angry young woman” in the anthology Attitude 2: The New Subversive Alternative Cartoonists, edited by Ted Rall. …But Mikhaela’s talents don’t stop there — she also graduated from Harvard with a degree in Social Anthropology.

Check out her politically-charged (and really entertaining!) cartoons at Mikhaela.net. If you like what you read, you can score some tees, totes and posters of her work at CafePress.

Resident Spotlight: Peter Kim

Wednesday, September 7th, 2005 at 6:59 pm

If you’re a theater buff and are wondering who that familiar-looking guy that you keep seeing in the elevator is… it’s probably *Peter Kim!*

Peter, one of our neighbors at 53BP and pictured above wearing a t-shirt from his alma mater, has recently performed on Broadway in Thoroughly Modern Millie and appeared on TV’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He is currently starring in *SIDES: THE FEAR IS REAL* — a show that he not only performs in, but also wrote and directed along with members of his theater company, Mr. Miyagi. Wow!

*SIDES,* the hilarious hit which follows six hopeful actors in their quest for employment through true life audition nightmares, has received critical acclaim from such publications as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Village Voice. The show also won a Best Ensemble Award at the prestigious New York International Fringe Festival in 2003.

*SIDES* is currently at The Culture Project at 45 Bleecker Street through October. Click here for info on performances and tickets.

(Note to Peter: When you accept your first Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe… make sure to thank your neighbors, OK?)

Resident Spotlight

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005 at 7:23 pm

Each morning, we all wave good-bye to Lyle as we head off to our “gotta pay the mortgage” day jobs. …But being the dynamic, fabulous people that we are, I know we all do stuff on the side that is *much* cooler than that. Each month on the 53boerum.com blog, we’d like to feature a resident that will inspire us with his/her side business… or volunteer work… or artwork, etc… We’ll even post a link to your site, like this —> Curliegirl [blatantly obvious plug for my own crochet accessories company].

If there’s someone you’d like to nominate (including yourself), PM lori via the message boards.
